The Derbyshire Writing School Interns

We are very excited to be introducing you to our interns! We’re working with the University of Derby to offer three paid internships over summer 2022. This is part of the Universities DRIVEN project, working with businesses in Derbyshire to provide practical, paid internships to graduates. It’s going to be a summer full of writing, and we can’t wait.

We are happy to have Charlotte, Lauren, and Mitchell join our team! Please join us in wishing them a warm writerly welcome. They may even make it onto the podcast to let you know what it’s really like behind-the-scenes here at Derbyshire Writing School.

Meet Lauren

Meet Lauren

Meet Lauren (although she’s actually been with us a while!). Lauren joined Derbyshire Writing School back in 2020. A real OG. She’s our staff blogger and is now an intern for the summer. We asked Lauren some *hot seat* questions:

What’s your best piece of writing advice?
My best piece of writing advice would be to embrace the ideas you have, as nobody will see things in exactly the same way as you. Embrace your uniqueness.

What do you love about Derbyshire Writing School?

I love that Derbyshire Writing School is a club, a special kind of community. I love the friendly feel of it and how it puts you at ease about writing, rather than making it feel daunting. It feels like we're all in the writing trenches together.

What are you looking forward to the most?

I'm really excited about exploring content creation in more detail, such as helping to develop a workbook about writing mindset. I love the idea of being part of a community that wants to help others with their writing and it's a great opportunity to share some of the things I've learnt about writing.

Meet Charlotte

Meet charlotte

Meet Charlotte! Our second intern. We’re proud to say all our interns are working on paid internships and we can’t wait to show you what they’re up to! We asked Charlotte to tell us a little more about herself and her experience…

What’s your favourite book?

My favourite book is Skulduggery Pleasant because the characters just come to life and the humour in the book mixes very well with the action. I’d definitely recommend it.

What are you looking forward to the most?

What I’m looking forward to in the internship is working with people who are just as passionate about writing as I am, and I’m looking forward to creating something to hopefully help people start along on their writing journey!

What’s your best piece of writing advice?

My best piece of writing advice is to always have fun while you’re doing it. If you really feel passionate about what you’re writing, your best work will come out and the end product will be something truly spectacular.

What do you love about Derbyshire Writing School?

What I love about Derbyshire Writing School is how accessible it is. All anybody needs to get started is an interest in writing and that’s it! It’s something that I would have wished for when I was just beginning my writing journey and I think it’s a fantastic resource.

Meet Mitchell

Last but not least, meet Mitchell! Our third intern. Mitchell wowed us in his interview with his passion for editing, so get ready for lots of incoming editing advice! We asked Mitchell to share about more about himself and what he’s looking forward to…

What’s your favourite book?

My favourite book is The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. It is actually the novel I chose to do my dissertation on. I recommend it for sure.

What are you looking forward to the most?

I am looking forward to simply having the chance to talk about writing creatively! I have studied theories such as narrative perspective, structure and genre, but to have the opportunity to apply this knowledge to creative writing and hopefully aid others in their writing journey is something I cannot wait to do.

What’s your best piece of writing advice?

My best piece of writing advice: if you have a free hour/ day/ week and you’re asking yourself whether to spend that time writing, the answer is always YES. No matter how much or little you write, there will always be something valuable that comes from it, even if you don’t realise it right away.

What do you love about Derbyshire Writing School?

What I love most about Derbyshire Writing School is its accessibility to everyone. Unlike other places that offer workshops and workbooks, there is no barrier or academic prerequisite. Writing is (and should be) for anyone, and the Derbyshire Writing School activity works to make this happen.

Have we got a dream team, or what? We’ll be sharing regular updates on social media so you can see what the team gets up to. You can also read more about the Derbyshire Writing School team on our About page.
